Empower Your Future with Reentry Support Services in Buford

Our vision is to reduce the recidivism rate (returning to prison)

by helping the ex-inmate to become a crime-free productive citizen again.

When an inmate is released from prison with $25 in his pocket, no family, no friends left, no food, no future, very few work skills, what is he going to do in 24 hours? What are his chances for successful re-entry into today's society without any help? What are his chances of getting caught up in the REVOLVING DOOR back to prison?

It is obvious to see why so many people coming out of prison return again and again. It is our heart and intention to help stop this continual cycle and transform the ex-offender into a law abiding, self-sustaining citizen.

Jesus said . . . "for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me . . . inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me."

--- Matthew 25:35, 36, 40b

The Vision of Set Free

Our vision is to reduce the recidivism rate (returning to prison) by helping the ex-inmate to become a crime-free productive citizen again.

After 25 years of inside-prison ministry, it is time to meet the re-entry process, (where the rubber meets the road) and be a part of the After-Care Ministry. The newly released ex-inmate, as he returns to a free society, will be faced with many obstacles and challenges and will need a strong Christian mentor. He will be like a lost sheep that needs to return to the Shepherd; we want to give him a helping hand up rather than a kick to put him down.

A Message From Our Founder

Tom Allanson

"
I am so thankful to God for calling me into this wonderful ministry for the last 25 years and walking with me, my Board members, our staff, and ALL of our supporters that have believed in Set Fee After Care Ministry to help us to help others get their SECOND CHANCE, graduate the program and return to their families as a new man.

There are over 50 thousand incarcerated in Georgia and only 11 website approved THOR houses for men. It's not very good odds to get a SECOND CHANCE to straighten your life from mistakes you made in the past, got you incarcerated, and stopped your life of valuable growth to God, family and to society where we must live. SET FREE AFTER CARE MINISTRY is the critical part to restoration. Please help us to be a blessing to these men."

He showed me how to save money instead of wasting it. Set Free After - Care gave me a chance to live a normal life for God. I feel blessed to have met Mr. Allanson, and I believe that God blesses the people that come through here."

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are the incarceration statistics in Georgia?
    • Georgia ranks 4th in the nation in incarceration
    • 1 out of every 13 Georgians is under some sort of supervision of Corrections, Parole, or Probation departments.
    • 350 inmates are released back into our communities each week with only $25 dollars in their pocket. The majority have no money or financial support, no food or clothing, no family or friends, and no work skills or hope for the future.
    • 3 out of 4 inmates have substance abuse problems, but only about 10% received any formal treatment while they are incarcerated

    Fiscal Implications $$$

    • Georgia ranks 4th in the nation for incarcerations. (1 out of 13 Georgians are under some sort of supervision of the Department of Corrections, Parole or Probation).
    • In 1982, Americans spent $9 Billion dollars for Corrections; by 2002 this figure had grown to $60 Billion, and still growing.
    • It is time for a new approach to recidivism.

GA Dept. of Corrections Operating Costs for a bed/day/yr:

                                                                 Bed/day   Bed/year

Close and Higher Security    $50.53          $18,445

Average (All other prisons)   $47.49          $17,332

    Probation & Div. Centers       $42.95          $15,678

    • Average cost is $47/day versus the 50 year old inmate in medical beds, which is $145/day.
    • Inmates 50 and older make up 9.1% of the total population in 2003.

  • What is the purpose of after-care?

    • To reduce recidivism (returning to prison) and stop the revolving door.
    • When recidivism is reduced by 1% it saves taxpayers 7 to 8 million dollars.
    • To assist the ex-offender in becoming a responsible, productive citizen that will remain crime free.
    • It is cheaper to rehabilitate God’s way with love than to build prisons at ($52 million to build and $18 million/yr to operate).

    Why re-entry matters:

    • Approx. 95% of the offenders in prison will eventually be released into our communities.
    • Approx. 19,000 inmates are released each year (350/week) while 20,000/yr go to prison.
    • 30% released from state prisons are re-arrested, and over 40% re-incarcerated.
    • They are returning faster than they are getting out!
  • What are the needs of ex-offenders?

Ex-Offenders have NEEDS that are often never considered:

    • 40% of released offenders have not obtained a GED or high school diploma
    • Only 1 out of 3 receives vocational training while incarcerated
    • 55% of inmates have children under 18
    • 1 out of 3 jail inmates reported some mental or physical disability

WE MUST STOP THE REVOLVING DOOR!
